The IBU World Cup kicked off with a thrilling weekend in Ostersund, Sweden, showcasing the best in mixed relay action. The single mixed relay and the mixed relay events captivated audiences with their high-stakes competition and strategic team dynamics.
In the single mixed relay, 24 countries vied for glory at the Swedish National Biathlon Arena. Each team, consisting of one man and one woman, alternated skiing for nine laps and completed four shooting stages. The Swedish duo of Sebastian Samuelsson and Ella Halvarsson claimed victory in 35:12.1, fueled by the support of their passionate home crowd. This triumph marked their second single mixed relay win in a year, building on their previous success in Kontiolahti, Finland.
Norway's Sturla Holm Laegreid and Maren Kirkeeide narrowly missed the top spot, finishing 19.1 seconds behind the Swedish champions. The French team, Fabien Claude and Camille Bened, secured a podium finish by edging out Germany by a mere half second. They trailed the Swedish winners by 37.3 seconds.
The U.S. team, unfortunately, finished in 18th place.
As the day progressed, 23 teams engaged in the challenging mixed relay event, battling through the snowy conditions. The French team, led by Eric Perrot and Emilien Jacquelin, who had placed second in the men's 4x7.5km relay the previous day, showcased their prowess. They were joined by Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and Lou Jeanmonnot, the anchors of the winning women's 4x6km relay team. The French dominated, crossing the finish line in 1:05:16.5.
Italy secured second place, 25.2 seconds behind the French, with Lisa Vittozzi and Dorothea Wierer, who had earned a second podium spot the day before in the women's 4x6km relay. The Italian squad was completed by Tommaso Giacomel and Lukas Hofer.
Norway, led by Endre Stroemsheim, Johan-Olav Botn, Karoline Offigstad Knotten, and Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, claimed the final podium spot, finishing 1:05.3 after the French. Norway had also triumphed in the men's 4x7.5km relay the day before.
The U.S. team, unfortunately, finished in sixth place in the 4x6km mixed relay.
The competition continues in Ostersund on December 2 with the women's 15km individual event, promising more thrilling action and strategic team battles.
