Located on a sprawling estate in Victoria, the cottage belongs to an Australian-American family who divide their time between continents. This explains the sophisticated blend of styles. For years, the 19th-century structure had been left to decay. Then Greg Natale, based in Sydney and already responsible for the couple's main residence, stepped in. "They appreciate atmospheric interiors with rich, moody palettes that reflect their cosmopolitan lifestyle," Natale explains. "But they also value warmth and comfort. Their homes are designed for both intimate family gatherings and grand-scale entertaining. They tasked us with transforming this uninhabitable relic into a warm, welcoming guest cottage for friends and family." And when Natale says 'relic,' he's not exaggerating – the cottage hadn't been touched since its original construction!
Natale's team undertook a complete rebuild, meticulously reconstructing the facade and adding a Victorian-style tiled porch and a charming front garden. The goal? To honor the building's heritage. "The owners were adamant about preserving the building's history, so we restored the original Federation-style architecture," Natale says. "Wherever possible, we salvaged and reused the old bricks, weaving authenticity into the new construction." This careful attention to detail adds layers of history and character that are impossible to replicate with purely modern materials.
The owners' penchant for dark, moody colors and rustic furniture heavily influenced the new interior design. "They envisioned the cottage as an immersive space filled with character. The inherent coziness and historical charm of English country-house style provided the perfect inspiration," Natale explains. "This isn't just an addition to their property; it's a natural extension of their home, reflecting their values of hospitality and providing a place for friends and family to create lasting memories." And this is the part most people miss... it's not just about aesthetics; it's about creating an experience.
Timber plays a central role in the design, with American oak floors, exposed beams, and custom joinery. Natale's vision was to recreate original features with a modern, refined twist. For example, the original Federation-era wooden fireplace was replaced with a Rosso Levanto marble replica. "This introduces a layer of material richness while paying homage to the cottage's past," Natale explains. "The timber provides a warm, grounding foundation, connecting the home to its rural surroundings. Its dark color creates a cocooning atmosphere, perfect for relaxing by the fire."
Now, here’s a potentially controversial point: The clients encouraged Natale to inject a playful twist into this backdrop. The result is a vibrant mix of layered patterns, including tartan blinds and rugs, and multiple designs from House of Hackney. Imagine a leopard-print floor lamp or a sofa upholstered in a recolored version of William Morris’s Blackthorn velvet! "Another standout detail is the striped Ralph Lauren wallpaper, which immediately establishes a characterful tone," Natale adds. "It provides a tailored symmetry that anchors the more whimsical mix of textiles and helps to shape the perception of space. The lavish use of marble throughout the project accentuates the color palette. "It elevates the space with a sense of opulence and permanence. We chose stones that reflect the clients' favorite colors: deep red Rosso Levanto on the living-room fireplace and custom shelving; heritage-green Verde Guatemala on the kitchen and bathroom sinks; and Calacatta Viola, with its regal purple veining, on the kitchen splashback. These saturated notes inject depth and drama, enriching the moody, cocooning atmosphere that defines the cottage."
While most rooms embrace dark colors, the kitchen offers a brighter, cheerier contrast, painted in sage-green Pale Olivine by Dulux. "We paired it with botanical wallpaper from Ralph Lauren for a fresh country look," says Natale. Here, and in the russet-red bathroom, you'll find one of the home's more unique details: pressed-tin ceiling tiles from Australian Pressed Metal. "Their floral patterns add an ornate quality while also offering practicality. Our approach was to build up each room in a way that feels both intentional and homely."
The finishing touch to this intensely personal guest space was a pair of serendipitous discoveries. "One of the most memorable moments during the restoration was finding two artifacts in the wreckage: an old shoe, likely over a century old, and an ornate key," Greg Natale recalls. "Instead of discarding them, we created a special place for them within the hallway floor, framing them in green stone. This gesture allows them to remain part of the cottage's story, anchoring the new interiors with a tangible connection to the past." This act of preservation elevates the design from mere decoration to something truly meaningful.
